Title
Ultra-Low Cost Wireless Access: Lessons from the Field - Slides

Abstract
Since 2003, we have deployed and operated a wireless access network in an under-resourced community in Houston, Texas. The network serves thousands of users over several square kilometers via a three tier multi-hop architecture employing 802.11. In this talk, I will describe lessons from the field spanning measurement studies that point to protocol design challenges to anthropological studies that characterize community response to new technology.

Biography
Edward Knightly is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University. He joined Rice in 1996 and was a visiting professor at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2003. He received the B.S. degree from Auburn University in 1991 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992 and 1996 respectively. Dr. Knightly received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 1997 and has been a Sloan Fellow since 2001.

Dr. Knightly is an associate editor for multiple journals including IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, and the Computer Networks Journal, and served as guest editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas of Communications Special Issue on Multi-Hop Wireless Mesh Networks. He served as general chair of ACM MobiSys 2007 and technical co-chair of IEEE INFOCOM 2005. He regularly serves on the program committee for numerous networking conferences including IEEE INFOCOM, ACM MobiCom, and ACM SIGMETRICS. Dr. Knightly's research interests are in the areas of mobile and wireless networks and high-performance and denial-of-service resilient protocol design.

AIMS AND TOPICS

Internet access is undergoing a fundamental change. More powerful devices and lower cost radio technologies are facilitating the transition to the Mobile Internet in which users can access a diverse range of services and applications anytime, anywhere. However, the huge increase in demand that this brings cannot easily be met by current radio access systems. Hence, there is a need for more powerful, more efficient, higher speed, lower cost radio technologies for Broadband Wireless Access.

There is much energy within the community to develop more advanced BWA technologies - activities span the wireless domain, ranging from more advanced antenna technologies to co-operative relays to mesh networking systems and many more: future networks will likely employ some mix of these different mechanisms. We anticipate that this 4th workshop will continue the series of successful workshops, providing a forum for new research results and reports on practical experience working with innovative technologies in the domain of Broadband Wireless Access. The workshop, then, is soliciting contributions including but not limited to topics listed below.
